NAELA Celebrates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Attorneys for Older Americans and People with Special Needs Join Efforts to Prevent Elder Abuse

Washington, DC — The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) celebrates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th. The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized this event “in its resolution 66/127, December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who first established the commemoration in June 2006. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.”

As an accredited nongovernmental organization to the United Nations' Open-Ended Working Group on Aging, NAELA has participated in international discussions on the need to protect the rights of seniors.

“NAELA will remain a part of the process to monitor international developments in this area and offer input and assistance as needed to ensure protection of the human rights of older persons,” said NAELA President Jennifer L. VanderVeen, CELA, CAP, NAELA Fellow.
