Professional Information

About the Practice
Our firm concentrates in elder and special needs law. This includes: helping people understand and plan for the programs available to finance long term care, such as Medicaid; drafting and assisting clients with the use of documents such as powers of attorney, wills and trusts; preparing and advising clients on the use of special needs trusts to protect the ability of individuals with a disability to receive needed benefits; helping families and individuals with special needs to understand their options to maintain autonomy for the person with special needs, while providing security at the appropriate level for the management of finances and health care decisions; working with personal injury attorneys and their clients to protect the clients’ eligibility for benefits; initiating and defending guardianship and protective placement cases; disability and mental health law; and contested litigation. Other elder law attorneys often refer contested matters to me.
Professional Biography
Attorney Carol J. Wessels has been practicing elder and disability law since 1991 and is the owner of Wessels & Liebau LLC in Mequon, Wisconsin. She graduated in 1988 from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Carol was director of the Seniorlaw program at Legal Action of Wisconsin, Inc., a non-profit law firm from 1997-2004. In that position, she obtained the first state grant to provide legal services to victims of elder abuse. She also worked as a staff attorney at the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups in Madison, Wisconsin. In addition to traditional elder law, she handles contested litigation cases including guardianship, trust, and probate issues, and appeals in Medicaid cases. She has litigated cases on the state and federal level, including briefing to the United Stated Supreme Court. In her spare time, she fights for a world without Alzheimer’s and walks her dogs.
