NAELA submitted a letter to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) opposing the Interim Final Rule (IFR) that would revoke the 30-Day Notification Requirement Prior to Termination of Lease for Nonpayment of Rent (89 FR 101270) (“30-day notice rule”). NAELA urged HUD to reinstate the 30-day notice rule, which mandates that public housing authority (PHA) and project-based rental assistance (PBRA) providers give tenants 30 days’ notice before filing an eviction for non-payment of rent. Crucially, the rule also guarantees residents the right to cure and requires that housing providers provide clear notice of outstanding rent and arrearages, along with explicit instructions for obtaining financial help, giving families a fair chance to remain in their homes.
