NAELA Celebrates 70th Anniversary of UN Human Rights Day
Washington, DC — December 10, 2018, will mark 70 years since the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document “proclaimed the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being -- regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. It is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 500 languages.”
On this day, the United Nations emphasizes the need for people to stand up for their own rights and the rights of others. The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) celebrates this day along with the United Nations and is committed to advocating for the rights of older Americans, people with special needs, and their families.
“NAELA is committed to protecting these vulnerable populations. Through our advocacy efforts, we do our best to make sure to protect and improve their rights. The NAELA Aspirational Standards reflect our holistic approach to assisting our clients and their families,” said NAELA President Michael J. Amoruso, Esq., CAP, Fellow.
In addition to celebrating Human Rights Day, NAELA has participated as an accredited nongovernmental organization to the United Nations' Open-Ended Working Group on Aging, a panel of international discussions on the need to protect the rights of seniors. Presentations focused on age discrimination, autonomy, independent living, health care, dignity, social security, access to resources, abuse and violence, and access to justice.
