Join us May 4 & 5, 2023, in Puerto Rico.

Conference2

We invite you to attend NAELA’s only in-person national meeting in 2023. Join your colleagues for two days of networking and practical education focusing on those we serve. We are hosting this year's NAELA Annual Conference on the island of Puerto Rico in San Juan on Thursday, May 4, and Friday, May 5, 2023. There are pre-conference programs on Wednesday, May 3, 2023.

Learn more about the full program agenda and register online at www.NAELA.org/Annual_Conference.

Puerto Rico welcomes NAELA with its island hospitality and rich cultural heritage. This Caribbean location is the perfect backdrop for 2023’s CLE program with its beaches, mountains, bioluminescent bays, and rainforest. As a United States territory, Puerto Rico offers an amazing experience without needing a passport or exchange of currency. It’s never been easier to get to Puerto Rico with 80 daily nonstop and budget-friendly flights to major cities throughout the United States.

As an attendee of the 2022 Annual Conference said, “We are all practitioners hoping to garner a little more knowledge from the ‘experts’ in the various fields to make our practices and our relationships with clients better.” This year’s program has been designed to do just that — offering four general sessions, as well as 15 breakout sessions covering timely, practical education. We’ve also made it a point this year to invite non-attorney subject matter experts at the top of their fields to deliver content that will give attendees even more opportunity and variety to expand their knowledge. Here’s a peek into just a few sessions.

Program Examples

Representing Fiduciaries: How to Keep Fiduciary Clients Out of Hot Water — presented by NAELA Executive Committee Member, Attorney Eric Einhart.

How SECURE is Your Retirement Benefits Planning? — presented by Attorney Mark Munson, CELA, CAP.

Advocating for Clients Who Need Us the Most — presented by Jennifer Goldberg, Deputy Director, Justice in Aging.

Helping Your Clients Take Care of the Legacy They Want to Leave — presented by Attorney Brenna Galvin.

The Great Sunset of 2025 and Other Tax Mysteries — presented by Attorney Charles C. Bratton II.

Cyber Liability: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly — presented by C. Michael Halfast, CPA.

The conference kicks off with our keynote speaker Mark Eiglarsh, a veteran trial attorney, author, and television personality. He shares his simple and effective strategies and perspectives you can use today to live a happier life. Mark's engaging stories from the courthouse and the tale of his own journey from grief to gratitude offer an inspiring road map for those seeking more out of life, work, and love. Whatever the root of your discontentment may be, happiness is a choice. The formula Mark provides is what you've been looking for, ensuring happiness guaranteed — or your misery back.

Other general sessions include the 2023 Clifton B. Kruse Lecture, Ableism and the Law. Ableism is pervasive and persistent, affecting all aspects of the lives of people with disabilities. This presentation by Robyn M. Powell, PhD, JD, Associate Professor, University of Oklahoma College of Law, will define ableism and describe the ways that ableism is woven into our laws, policies, and collective conscience. This presentation will also explore how ableism is embedded in legal practice and conclude with suggestions for attorneys about how to commit to an anti-ableist practice.

And of course, there's the 2023 Case Law Update, a review of some of the more significant cases of the past year with insightful commentary and practice suggestions.

Networking Opportunities

A NAELA conference would not be complete without networking opportunities. Our attendees value the hall-way chats and time spent in the exhibit hall to discuss the latest challenges facing them in their practices, so we have incorporated plenty of breaks to network with our valued exhibitors and sponsors as well as fellow attendees.

Welcome Reception on Thursday, May 4 (included in registration).

First-time Attendee Breakfast on Thursday, May 4 (included in registration).

Dine-arounds on Wednesday, May 3 (dinner on own). Look for the email to sign up to enjoy dinner with other attendees. Make new friends and enjoy time with existing friends.

Optional Pre-Conference Programs on May 3, 2023

The 2023 NAELA Annual Conference kicks off with two distinct pre-programs — separate registration is required.

UnProgram — Back by popular demand
Wednesday, May 3, 2023  |  8:00 AM to 3:30 PM

NAELA’s UnProgram is the place to exchange ideas and solutions on topics important to you and your practice with attorneys from all over the country. With 30 discussion subjects, flexibility is a key feature of this unique program with content categorized in three significant areas:

Practice and Firm Management

Current and Substantive Elder Law Topics

How Elder Law Has Evolved and Is Changing

An UnProgram means this is your meeting and your agenda — while some discussion topics will be predetermined by our expert facilitators, many small group discussion topics will be decided by attendees. Continue the discussions over dinner on Wednesday night as we’ll be offering dine-arounds for those of who want to dine with fellow attendees.

VA Accreditation Workshop — Fulfills initial as well as ongoing CLE requirements for VA Accreditation
Wednesday, May 3, 2023  |  7:50 AM to 11:30 AM

If you're considering adding representation of veterans with claims for VA benefits to your practice or your current VA Accreditation CLE requirement needs to be renewed, be sure to register for this VA Accreditation Workshop.

All attorneys who assist or represent veterans with claims for VA benefits must be accredited by the Veterans Administration. This 3-hour program fulfills both the initial as well as the ongoing CLE requirements for VA accreditation pursuant to 38 CFR 14.629(b)(1)(iii) and (iv).

For this course to fulfill the initial attorney accreditation requirements, you must first file an application to become a VA Accredited attorney with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, and it must be approved before you attend.
