NAELA Celebrates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Attorneys Advocate for Older Adults and People With Disabilities to Prevent Elder Abuse
Washington, DC — The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) acknowledges the growing population of older adults by celebrating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th. The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized this annual event “in its resolution 66/127, December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who first established the commemoration in June 2006. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.”
As an accredited nongovernmental organization to the United Nations' Open-Ended Working Group on Aging, NAELA has participated in international discussions on the need to protect the rights of older adults.
“NAELA member attorneys strive to protect older adults and support legislation that prevents financial and physical elder abuse,” said NAELA President Letha Sgritta McDowell, CELA, CAP.
