NAELA Announces Winner of National Writing Award
Co-Authors Georgia Burke, JD; Jennifer Goldberg, JD; and Kate Lang, JD Receive John J. Regan Writing Award
Washington, DC — The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) proudly announced that Georgia Burke, JD; Jennifer Goldberg, JD; and Kate Lang, JD received the award for their article, “Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income Eligibility: Time for a Tune-Up,” published in the Spring 2016 NAELA Journal. The article exposes the many holes in the government’s social safety net for elders and persons with disabilities. As noted in the article, the numbers used by the government for Social Security have not been updated since 1972. Without an update, elders and people with disabilities lose their ability to live independently and make ends meet.
The Regan Writing Award was established in 1996 in memory of John J. Regan — a long-time NAELA member and Fellow, and a pioneer in Elder Law — and is meant to encourage quality submissions to NAELA Journal from NAELA members and non-members.
About the Authors
Georgia Burke is Directing Attorney in the Oakland, Calif., office of Justice in Aging. Her work focuses on national policy advocacy to improve the Medicare and Medicaid programs for low-income older adults. She received a JD from Georgetown University Law Center. Her undergraduate degree is from Manhattanville College.
Jennifer Goldberg is Directing Attorney for the Health Team at Justice in Aging in the Washington, DC, office, where she develops initiatives to improve access to health care and long-term services and supports for low-income older adults nationwide. She received a JD from Harvard Law School; a LLM from Georgetown University Law Center; and her undergraduate degree from Harvard and Radcliffe.
Kate Lang is a Senior Staff Attorney in the Washington, DC, office of Justice in Aging, where she is a member of the Economic Security team, working primarily on Social Security and Supplemental Security Income-related issues. She received a JD from Fordham University School of Law and an undergraduate degree from Oberlin College.
NAELA Journal is a publication of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
