Mark your calendar now for NAELA’s 2018 Annual Conference to be held on Thursday, May 17, through Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, in the heart of Downtown.

What better place than New Orleans, a city rich in culture and history, to collaborate with your peers and experts in the area of elder and special needs law.  Let’s take “old school elder law and unmask a new school twist.” The program includes more than 24 distinctive sessions in three timely learning tracks.

Public Benefits Planning: The only thing certain in today’s world is change. We have to be able to plan for our clients in uncertain times by knowing how to apply the necessary planning tools. This year’s program begins with Medicaid planning basics you should know for every client and provides an opportunity to take a deeper dive into specific planning techniques. We must stay informed and be prepared to counsel our clients accordingly, and to adapt our practices to succeed.

Advocacy: The 2018 Conference will focus not only on the information and updates you need to advocate for your clients’ best “today” but will also provide a glimpse into the future. Expectations are changing and the housing and services available to clients today will simply not suffice in tomorrow’s society. This advocacy track covers long-term care, age and disability discrimination, public school children with special needs, and ethics in litigation.

Technology: With the rapidly changing world of technology, being connected to the virtual world, even in the practice of law, is a must. Scott Grossberg, proven litigator and bestselling author of The Million Dollar iPad and The iPad Lawyer, will show us how to evolve our practices in the 21st century by incorporating legal technology to make us smarter and more efficient while retaining those remarkable client relationships that are the hallmark of elder law and special needs practices. This track will cover sessions on client portals, technology policies for your legal staff, social media, and more.

New Orleans is a magical place with a unique culture and way of life. The 2018 Annual Conference Planning Committee has worked some “fun time” into the program as well. The traditional Welcome Reception on Thursday evening will highlight local cuisine and beverages as well as New Orleans traditions.

Registration will open early 2018 so get ready for some new twists in the Big Easy.
