T
he 2017 Summit brings the practice of elder law and special needs planning to life at an advanced learning level. The 2017 Summit Planning Committee has assembled a conference agenda with something for everyone. You might choose to immerse yourself in all three breakout sessions offered in an immersion track or pick and choose from focused, in-depth, breakout sessions that will help move your practice to the next level. All sessions focus on the application of law and the principles and ethics associated with the specific area of practice. Here are just a few of the sessions you can expect at the 2017 Summit.

• Keynote speaker: Susan W. Tolle, MD, Cornelia Hayes Stevens Chair, Director, Center for Ethics in Health Care, Professor of Medicine, Internal Medicine & Geriatrics. Dr. Tolle has more than two decades of experience in conducting research about the Physicians Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment Program (POLST) and end-of-life care more broadly.
• Yikes, I’m an Agent — Now What Do I Do?
• Investigating and Filing a Financial Exploitation Civil Lawsuit
• Capturing the Client’s Wishes Regarding End-of-Life Decision Making
• Under What Circumstances Should a Trustee Exercise the Discretion to “Reduce or Supplant” Benefits?
• Preventing Being a Part of Exploitation
• How to Make a Crummy Special Needs Trust Not So Crummy
• Is the Health Care Document Enough?
• Branding Your Elder Law Practice: Setting Your Practice Apart and Making it Memorable
• What Is Your Experience Worth?
• Advance Planning: Paying for Long-Term Care
• The Power of Attorney Is Only as Good as the Agent: Helping Clients Make Prudent Decisions About Their Agent Under a Power of Attorney

• Does Every Trust for a Married Client Need to Be Drafted to Include Portability?
• The Fiduciary Has Been Accused of Wrongdoing.  How Do You Represent and Advise Them?
• Creative Planning With an ABLE Account
• …and more.

Whatever the topic, the Summit sessions are designed to challenge and inspire through interactive, hands-on, learning techniques.  And, it’s not all about the topic — you’ll learn how to apply what you learn to your practice and to your own real-life client situations when you’re back in the office.

We hope you’ll plan to join us in beautiful Newport Beach, California, this November for another NAELA educational opportunity to engage with other elder law and special needs planning professionals in and out of the classroom.
