Whether you are just beginning law school, grappling with the choice of a specialty in your studies, or are ready to open your practice; you should certainly consider Elder Law or Special Needs Law. NAELA membership is your first step to a successful Elder Law or Special Needs Law career.


How to Join NAELA

NAELA's law student membership is open to full-time law school students who attend an accredited college or university. Law student membership is available to students for the duration of their studies. NAELA law students have access to a variety of resources and professionals who are leaders in Elder Law and Special Needs Law.

Student membership rate is $35 a year.


NAELA Student Journal

From 2006 to 2011 NAELA also published the annual Student Journal. The Student Journal featured the best articles submitted by law students from around the country on cutting edge issues effecting senions and people with disabilities.


CareerCenter

With its mission to serve the legal community and establish NAELA members as the premier practioners of Special Needs Law and Elder Law, NAELA’s CareerCenter is an important link between those looking to work in these fields and those firms seeking talent. For job seekers, NAELA's CareerCenter is a free service providing access to employers and jobs in the industry. In addition to posting resumes, job seekers can browse jobs based on the criteria they find matches their skills and goals.  ob seekers can also post confidentially or search anonymously by creating a Job Agent. Job Agents notify job seekers via email when jobs matching their criteria are posted.



Law School Curriculum Guidance- Elder Law

On May 2, 2007, the NAELA Board of Directors approved the following suggested curriculum for studies in Elder Law.  The following courses constitute the core Elder Law curriculum and are strongly recommended:  

  • Any Elder Law specific course, including substantive courses, seminars, clinics and internships
  • Trusts and Estates (survey course)
  • Estate Planning
  • Estate and Gift Tax
  • Bioethics or Death and Dying
  • Wills and Trusts Drafting
  • Interviewing, Counseling, Negotiations
  • Administrative Law
  • Public Benefits or Poverty Law
  • Any writing requirement should be satisfied by writing on an Elder Law topic

The following courses are also relevant to an Elder Law practice:

  • Trial Advocacy
  • Health Law
  • Housing & the law
  • Family Law
  • Consumer Law
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Disabilities law
  • Pension Law or Employee Benefits
  • Law Practice Management
  • Financial planning course
  • Accounting and the Law
  • Insurance Law

This curriculum assumed a certain number of required law school courses, such as Professional Responsibility, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Property, Torts, Evidence, etc.

  • Federal Taxation of Trusts, Estates and Gifts
  • Wills and Trusts Drafting
  • Government Benefits
  • Family Law
  • Advanced Wills and Trusts
