Our Standards — Why Choose a NAELA Member Attorney

Mission

The mission of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys is to establish NAELA members as the premier providers of legal advocacy, guidance and services to enhance the lives of people with special needs and people as they age. NAELA’s vision is to be the recognized leader inspiring and empowering attorneys to enhance the quality of life for the elderly and those with special needs.

NAELA Members Stand Out

Recognizing that Elder and Special Needs Law has developed as a separate specialty area because of the unique and complex issues faced by people as they age and people with disabilities NAELA’s Professionalism and Ethics Committee developed a set of Aspirational Standards for members to elevate professionalism and enhance the quality of service to their clients.

NAELA Past President Stuart D. Zimring, CAP, says this about the NAELA Aspirational Standards:

"The clients served by Elder and Special Needs Law attorneys are among society's most vulnerable, often coming to us at times in their lives when they are most in need of wise counsel and advice. Because of this unfortunate reality, many of us believe that we, as Elder and Special Needs Law attorneys, should aspire to a higher level of professional practice standards than other attorneys."

All NAELA members are attorneys committed to the highest standards of ethics in representing the needs or promoting the welfare of the elderly, and pledge to support the Academy's Aspirational Standards.

A Wealth of Experience

Many NAELA members have enhanced knowledge, skills and experience required to earn them the designation as a Certified Elder Law Attorney. Other members have met or exceeded the requirements to be listed for different areas of law in the Experience Registry.

Honors, Awards, and Distinction

Annually, NAELA presents awards to members who have made significant contributions in his or her field and in the community.

Members who have made exceptional contributions to meeting the needs of older Americans and by demonstrating commitment to the Academy can be bestowed NAELA’s highest distinction of Fellow of the Academy.

Members may also be invited to join the Council of Advanced Practitioners
, a group of innovators, leading the direction of Elder and Special Needs Law.
